In March 2016 I was invited to give a workshop about Sustainable Design in partnership with ALBA’s Design Department in Libanon for Beirut Design Week. This year the theme for Beirut Design Week is “Growing Sustainably.” This focus grew out of the protests of summer 2015 around waste management because a river of stinking garbage bags snakes its way through the suburbs of Beirut. This overflowing landfill, stretching for hundreds of meters through Jdeideh in the city’s suburbs, is the consequence of the city’s months-long garbage crisis.
